An extensive search of historic newspapers unearthed a Scotch whiskey called V.O.P. – and no bourbons or bonded whiskies. In the Buffalo Trace Distillery archives, a 1932 letter from Theo Wiehe to Albert Blanton names V.O.P. as one of multiple brands listed in a request for United States Patent Office certificates of registration. In a subsequent 1933 letter, Blanton responds that V.O.P. is one of several brands the distillery did not own, 'but which are used for customers on their bottling orders.
